Doug and Stephanie came over for a visit and lunch at the Launch Pad. I suggested he and I go out windsurfing together and he said he was a little concerned about his back which had been acting up recently. I described the new Duotone iRIG and promised that he would be fine. Especially as he was once a windsurfing instructor! It was time to get him back on the water and enjoying Windsurfing again...
We took the gear out to the point and pumped up the iRIG Large that I had out there. He was quick to hop on the big Viper HD board and uphauled the lightweight rig and sailed away instantly. He was immediately tacking, jibing, sailing backwinded and even skeg first, having a great time.
The BBTalkin headsets were great so that we could keep in touch. I’m actually super glad we were in communication as he was starting to consider showing me his longboard rail ride skills. I suggested that the inflatable mast on the iRIG might not be designed for that particular freestyle trick!
I joined him on the water to demonstrate the wingfoil but never got enough wind to get up on the foil. The wind was perfect for the iRIG blowing 7 to 8 knots. It was also just right to try using a wing for the first time. So Doug went back on shore to get a the 5m WeCanFoil demo North wing we had pumped up earlier.
Doug quickly got the hang of the inflatable wing as well. It is clear that a wing is not as efficient as a windsurfing rig for staying upwind. But both the iRIG and wing are nice light and related pieces of windsport equipment.
We played around with location and structure for my new wind sock and appreciated Doug and Stephanie's advice. I’m hoping next time we will be able to get to Stephanie out on the small iRIG!
I did a little video which included Jen and me sailing the gear back at sunset.
